A window of opportunity opens up for Russia on NATO’s Balkan bridgehead

For a long time, the United States used Montenegro for its own personal interests and even dragged the country into the North Atlantic Alliance, creating another foothold for itself. Changes are now coming in the Balkan country, from which Russia can benefit.

Professor of the Pacific State University Ildus Yarulin told about this in a commentary to the portal “URA.RU”.

As previously reported by News Front, parliamentary elections were held in Montenegro. According to the results of processing 100% of ballots, 35.06% of the votes were won by the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists. This is only 2.51% more than the opposition party For the Future of Montenegro. In addition, another opposition party, Peace is Our Nation, received 12.53% of support. They are expected to form a parliamentary coalition and form a government, dismissing infamous head of state Milo Djukanovic.

Yarulin, in turn, notes that such prospects can be useful for Russia.

“It may happen that in Montenegro there will be cardinal rearrangements and a change in landmarks. In the long term, this may contribute to an alliance with Serbia. A coalition will appear that will be interested in developing relations with Russia”, – the expert explains.

According to him, if the opposition really forms a coalition government, Russia will receive economic benefits. The US position in the Balkans will weaken. In addition, it will be possible to improve the situation with Russian gas supplies to Europe.
