State Department perceives the Arctic as NATO’s northern flank

The US authorities strive to ensure that the Arctic was a place for “peaceful cooperation”, but at the same time they perceive the region as the northern flank of NATO. This was announced by the new US State Department Arctic Coordinator Jim Dehart.

“As for the Russian military presence. They are present in the Arctic. They have increased their activity. We must keep this in mind. We want it to be a region of peaceful cooperation in the field of science, search and rescue operations, education, but we realize that the Arctic is the northern flank of NATO, we also look through the prism of this at the region, ” he said.
