China’s ambassador said Beijing wants to work with Washington on more stable relations

The diplomat stressed that China would not allow making its foreign policy a hostage of someone’s “suspicions, fears or hatred.

China wants to work with the US President Donald Trump’s administration to build a more stable and healthy relationship. China’s ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, said this on Wednesday, the China Daily reported. The diplomat, according to the publication, spoke in a talk show on CNN, outlining Beijing’s approaches to complicated relations with Washington.

“President Trump is the President of the United States, elected by the American people. Thus, we are ready to work with him and his administration to build a more stable and stronger relationship between the two great countries”, –  the newspaper quotes the Chinese ambassador’s answer to the question whether Trump is a friend or an enemy of China. At the same time, Tsui Tiankai stressed that China will not allow its foreign policy to be held hostage by someone else’s “suspicions, fears or hatred.”

Cui Tiankai also commented on allegations that Beijing has become more assertive, expansionary and aggressive in recent years, saying that China, like any other country in the world, has a legitimate right to build a modernized, strong and prosperous power.

“I think the fundamental question for the United States is quite simple: are they ready, do they want to live with another country with a completely different culture, a completely different political and economic system in the world and cooperate on so many and increasing global challenges?” – noted the ambassador.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a draft defense budget for the next fiscal year (starting in the country on October 1), according to which, among other things, it is expected to allocate $3.6 billion to “deter China in the Indian and Pacific region.
