Anti-government protests continue in Bulgaria

Anti-government rallies have been held in Bulgaria for almost a week. People were outraged by corruption in the bureaucracy and called on the government to resign.

Not only Sofia but also other cities are covered by the actions. After the sixth day of protests in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, two police officers were injured and six people were detained, a police spokesman said.

“At about 11 p.m. provocateurs threw two pyrotechnic bombs into the crowd in front of the Council of Ministers building. After that, bags of red paint and glass bottles, both full and empty, flew towards the cordon, where the policemen were wearing no helmets. An attempt was made to storm the building, the front doors of which had been broken into. Two policemen needed medical help, many were slightly injured and one of the organizers of the action was injured. A total of six people were detained, including one of those who broke down the doors”, –  Zlatanov said.

After additional police forces were pulled up to the site of the incident, the situation was quickly normalized.

“The police do not want disturbances, we again urge citizens to observe public order and not to give in to provocation”, –  the deputy director of police said.

He condemned the protesters’ actions, stressing that democracy is not achieved in this way.
