The European Union calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to take measures to de-escalate the situation at the border between the two countries, according to a statement by the EU foreign policy press office.
“The EU calls on both sides to stop armed confrontation, to refrain from actions and rhetoric that provoke tension and to take immediate steps to prevent escalation”, – said in a document.
The clash occurred on July 12 on the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia a few hundred kilometers from unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh – in Tovuz region and Tavush region respectively. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced that its positions were shelled by the Armenian military. The Armenian military department reported that the Azerbaijani military tried to seize an Armenian stronghold with artillery support.
Baku said that four Azerbaijani servicemen were killed in the clash, the Armenian side reported two casualties.
