The party with the highest number of votes will form a new government.
Parliamentary elections began on Friday in Singapore, with a record 12 opposition parties participating, in addition to the People’s Action Party (PAP) which has ruled since 1965. According to representatives of the election commission, this time more than 2.65 million citizens of the republic who have reached the age of 21 should vote.
According to the Constitution, the party with the highest number of votes will form a new government, which will then be approved by the president. The future cabinet is expected to be based on representatives of the so-called fourth generation of leaders, whose central figure is Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keith. Local observers estimate that this is the politician who will assume the post of Prime Minister. The current Prime Minister, Li Xiang Moon, has repeatedly stated that he will leave office until 2022.
The electoral contestants will work until 20:00 (15:00 Moscow time) and the preliminary results will be published a few hours after the voting. Due to the pandemic, Coronavirus patients in hospital or in temporary isolation centres would not be able to vote. Voters under house quarantine, as well as people with fever and symptoms of ODS, are strongly advised by the authorities to come at the last hour before polling stations close.
