OSCE told how the media will be blocked in Ukraine due to “On Media” law

It is unacceptable to pass a law regulating the work of the media with such vague definitions.

This statement was made by OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Arlem Desir, commenting on the Law on Media in his report.

According to him, an independent report was submitted back in February, which stated that the Ukrainian bill did not comply with international standards and should be amended to avoid negative impact on media freedom.

Although some restrictions can be justified by ensuring national security, the wording should be spelled out in detail for each specific case.

“The legal analysis also raised concerns over the possibility of fines being imposed on certain media outlets, prohibiting their distribution on the basis of very broad and vague wordings”, – said Desir.
