Zhang Xiaoming, head of the Hong Kong and Macao Offices of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, believes that the era in which China has taken political steps with others in mind “is in the past and will never come back.
China’s central government considers the threat of officials from certain Western countries to impose severe sanctions against Beijing because of the adoption of a national security law in Hong Kong to be “gangsters” and has no fear of increased external pressure. This was announced on Wednesday by Zhang Xiaoming, deputy head of the Chinese State Council’s office for Hong Kong and Macau.
“As for the statements of officials of some [western] states, threatening to apply severe sanctions, these people have gangster logic”, – he said at a press conference, – “We have passed a law to protect state security in an administrative region of China. What does this have to do with them, because this is a domestic political issue? Of course, we are not scared by such statements [of officials from other countries]”.
As the official pointed out, the era when China has taken political steps with others in mind “is in the past and will never come back. “In the West, we are accused of not respecting the principle of ‘one country, two systems’, of violating Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy,” he added. – It seems that the central authorities in Beijing are not entitled to any action in dealing with this special administrative region. At the same time, on the contrary, the West can afford anything it wants.
Zhang Xiaoming recalled that nowhere in the world will the government tolerate actions that undermine national security. “The principle of one country, two systems” is part of China’s state strategy. No one values them anymore and understands them deeper than we do”, – he concluded.
