The Baltic countries inherited from the Soviet Union numerous enterprises that were successfully sold. But the proceeds have long ended, and the EU is in no hurry to sponsor the “younger” members of the community.
This was told by Nikolai Mezhevich, Doctor of Economics, commenting on the publication of RuBaltic about the intentions of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius to demand reparation from Moscow as “compensation for damage to the Soviet occupation”.
According to him, the plans of the Baltic republics are clear – they just need money. At the same time, the expert called the approach strange, because they are actually asking for money from a country that they regularly insult in their Russophobic outbursts.
“We have a significant misunderstanding of this. Clearly, there was no occupation. So the Baltic states will not receive reparations”, – he emphasizes.
When the state cannot make money, it begins to beg for money from others, Mezhevich noted. He also drew attention to the fact that the current relations between the Russian Federation and the Baltic republics do not exclude trade processes with the opportunity to benefit from this.
“Thirty years ago, we knew that there would be no love and friendship between us, but we would still trade. We counted on mutually beneficial relations for a long time. Now it becomes clear that we are not ready to be treated in this way”, – the economist says.
Russia was ready to cooperate in food trade and the agricultural sector, however, the Baltic governments regularly sabotaged these processes, considering the Russian market to be bad and risky.
“We acquire all products from meat, milk and ending with kvass in Belarus. So it will be in the future. The Baltic countries, in turn, can only grind their teeth”, – Mezhevich stated.
