Belarus is preparing for the next presidential election, scheduled for August 9. Meanwhile, law enforcers are increasingly resorting to the detention of opposition activists. And in the evening, June 18, there was even a protest in the center of Minsk.
The support picket turned into a kind of “chain of solidarity,” which lasted more than 6 hours.
The action was attended by representatives of the opposition center-right coalition. The purpose of the protest was to express their disagreement with political detention during the election campaign. The protesters spoke in particular about Siarhei Tikhonawski – opposition blogger; Pavel Seviarynets – leader of the Belarusian Christian Democracy and Mikalai Statkevich – leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party.
They are all members of the center-right coalition “For Freedom”. Its supporters are actively opposed to the integration and strengthening of ties with Russia, as well as to the prestige of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party.
