The extinction of the pandemic has boosted the flow of illegal migrants to the EU

Most of the migrants were found on the central and western Mediterranean routes.

According to the UNN citing Frontex, the European Union’s external border security agency, the number of migrants identified during an attempt to enter the EU illegally in May jumped sharply after record low figures amid a coronavirus outbreak and related restrictions.

“In May, the number of detected cases of illegal border crossing on the main migration routes of Europe has recovered from the previous month’s record, reaching almost 3,500”, –  the Frontex report says.

It is reported that the majority of migrants were found on the central and western Mediterranean routes. The number of illegal immigrants in the Western Balkans has also increased rapidly.

“In May, more than 900 illegal border crossings were recorded on this route, 10 times more than in the previous month. In the first five months of 2020, the total flow increased by 50% compared to the same period last year and amounted to more than 6900”, –  the report says.
