Tehran intends to strengthen relations with Damascus, despite US sanctions against Syria, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.
“As before, we will continue economic cooperation with a stable people and the government of Syria and, in spite of sanctions, will strengthen economic relations”, – Mousavi said in a statement.
He also called the sanctions economic terrorism, noting that under the conditions of coronavirus, they will intensify suffering of the Syrians, which is why they are inhumane.
The U.S. President Donald Trump signed the sanctions law, which became known as Caesar, at the end of 2019. It entered into force on June 1 and includes sanctions affecting almost all areas of the Syrian economy. The sanctions list was expanded on June 17, 14 people got under restriction, including the spouse of Syrian President Bashar Assad Asma Assad and his sister Bushra Assad, as well as 21 organizations.
