Moscow is counting on Germany’s continued support for the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project, despite aggressive pressure from the United States, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.
Klaus Ernst, head of the Federal Bundestag committee on energy, commenting on the country’s possible response to the US sanctions against Nord Stream-2, called for “stop babbling” and “throwing cotton balls”, and give a tough answer, proposing sanctions against the US senators who spoke with initiative of new sanctions against Nord Stream-2.
“We look forward to further support of the project from the German government. We believe that all of its participants will be able to fully fulfill their contractual obligations, and all states interested in the new gas pipeline will show the political will necessary to implement this strategically important reliable energy supply for a united Europe initiative”, – the reporters quoted Zakharova as saying.
She noted that the “aggressive pressure” exerted by the US on European partners is an unprecedented fact for transatlantic relations. The sanctions discussed in the US Congress are designed to inflict a direct blow on the German economy, Zakharova emphasized.
She also added that the reaction to them is the sovereign decision of Berlin and the EU countries.
