The new unit will report directly to the Hong Kong Police Commissioner.
The secretary (minister) for security of this special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China, John Lee, told the South China Morning Post on Wednesday that the Hong Kong police are establishing a special unit to enforce the national security law. It will become operational as soon as the new law enters into force.
“The Hong Kong police will have to create a special unit to learn how to apply the law to actual situations, collect intelligence and evidence about actions described in the law as illegal”, – the minister said. – “The new body will have the ability to collect information, conduct investigations and take specific actions. We should also have a strategy for the long-term development of this specialized unit”, – the minister said.
So far, the Minister has refused to specify how the entity will interact with the security agencies of mainland China, which, with the adoption of the new law, intend to deploy its presence in Hong Kong.
