Secretary of State draws parallels between the situation in Hong Kong and Hitler's invasion of Europe

“Obviously, the situation is such that the promises made by the Chinese Communist Party in its treaty with the United Kingdom and which it violated when it decided to deprive the people of Hong Kong of the freedom that was promised to it, recall some promises that were broken when Germany has launched an invasion of the rest of Europe, ” he said.

At the same time, Pompeo emphasized that Washington is not seeking an open confrontation with Beijing.

“The United States is always careful that when we come into conflict, we do this in the most extreme case, when there are no other options for protecting freedom,” he said.

According to him, the United States “must work with the Chinese Communist Party, and work through diplomatic methods.”
