Gerhard Schroeder, who in the past was Chancellor of Germany, supported the idea of lifting anti-Russian sanctions. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
He emphasized that Berlin needed cooperation with Moscow in the context of the crisis caused by the pandemic.
Schroeder said that Russia has forgiven Germany for World War II and is ready to cooperate on the basis of trust. At the same time, the German side is behaving incorrectly in this situation, the former chancellor is sure.
“The fact that we support sanctions against Russia goes against this. Firstly, they evoke historical memories in Russia, and secondly, they do not change Russian politics. Right now, when due to the crisis in connection with the coronavirus, difficult times await us in the economy, more cooperation is needed. Therefore, senseless sanctions should be lifted, ” he said.
In addition, Schroeder noted that sanctions against Russia are simply useless. With their help, it will not work to force Moscow to anything, including the “return” of Crimea to Kiev.
