In the past week alone, more than 3.8 million Americans have applied to the Employment Service for unemployment benefits.
This was reported by the agency “Associated Press” on Thursday, April 30.
It is noted that about 30.3 million U.S. citizens have applied for the benefit in a month and a half.
“This is more people than live in the megacities of New York and Chicago combined, and this is certainly the worst series of dismissals in the history of observation”, – reads the publication.
Statistics show that one in six American workers has been laid off. By the end of April, the unemployment rate in the country is projected to grow by 20%. During the Great Depression, this figure was 25%.
According to the released data, 18 million applications were approved by the Employment Service. This figure is lower than the total for two reasons. First, not everyone has been able to achieve unemployment benefits. Secondly, because of overwork, services are a week behind.
