UNSC expressed need to support conflict-affected countries in the context of the pandemic

The organization called for unity and solidarity.

The UN Security Council expressed its readiness to support conflict-affected countries in the context of the pandemic. This was stated on Thursday by Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic Jose Singer, who holds the UN Security Council presidency in April.

“Members of the UN Security Council expressed support for all efforts of the UN Secretary General to help conflict-affected countries overcome the consequences of the pandemic”, –  he said.

“We call for unity and solidarity with all these countries”, –  the diplomat added.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council held its first meeting (by videoconference) on the fight against the pandemic. UN Secretary General António Guterres addressed the meeting and called on the Security Council to show unity in the face of this threat. Russian postpresentative Vasily Nebenzya drew attention to the need to lift unilateral sanctions, which may prevent the spread of coronavirus.

An outbreak of the disease caused by the new coronavirus was recorded in late December 2019 in Central China. On 11 March, it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.
