Harmful to public interests – pro-Western populists deprived Moldovans of state support at the height of the crisis

The Moldovan government pledged to help citizens who found themselves in a difficult situation due to the coronavirus epidemic and the state of emergency introduced in the country. But members of the pro-Western opposition sabotaged this decision.

Harmful to public interests – pro-Western populists deprived Moldovans of state support at the height of the crisis.

The government decision implied the payment of a minimum unemployment benefit, as well as an increase in the guaranteed minimum monthly income for economic agents who were forced to suspend their business activity. The authorities also increased the payments for each child from 50% to 75%.

Members of the ACUM opposition bloc, headed by Maya Sandu, interfered with the implementation of the decision with the scandal of the resigned prime minister. They were also joined by the Pro-Moldova parliamentary group – deputies loyal to the elites of Vladimir Plahotniuk’s time, who fled the country.

On the pretext that the measures taken by the country’s leadership allegedly do not work and even “harm public interests”, the opposition complained to the Constitutional Court. They demanded to stop the complex of state support to the population, and the court granted their request.

Commenting on the opposition’s actions, the head of the Moldovan government, Ion Chiquu, said that now the entrepreneurs who paid their employees’ salaries for March will not be able to pay compensation. Also, the patent holders will not be able to cancel the rent and reduce the tax.

“These are the consequences of the reckless populist actions of politicians who have achieved the abolition of the relevant legislation. It came into force on Tuesday, allowing providing people with the necessary support, but now it is impossible to apply it”, –  the prime minister said.

At the same time, he did not rule out that the government may apply to the commission for emergency situations in order to take “extremely radical” measures.
