EU and UK Committee to oversee Brexit agreement

A joint EU-UK committee to implement the Brexit agreement will monitor all commitments, said the European Council Vice President for Inter-Agency Relations and Forecasting Marosh Shefchovic, the appointed EU representative to the joint committee.

Shefchovich posted a short video message on Twitter.

“I’m proud that President Ursula von der Leyen appointed me as the EU representative and co-chair of the EU-Britain joint committee established in accordance with the withdrawal agreement (of Britain from the EU – ed.). The role of the committee should focus on overseeing the implementation of commitments and the application of agreements. We will work closely with the UK to ensure that these commitments are effectively implemented. We will work closely with the main negotiator Michel Barnier and his team”, – Shefcovic said.

He added that the first meeting of the joint committee will take place before the end of March.

It is expected that the committee’s task will also include resolving disagreements in the interpretation of the provisions of the Brexit agreement, if any arise during the negotiations.

Last Tuesday, Michel Barnier received the EU mandate to negotiate with London on a future partnership. The partnership agreement should appear before the end of 2020, when the transition period ends. Work on the agreement can be extended by mutual agreement until the end of 2022.
