Greece is tightening measures to combat the influx of refugees

In 2020, Greece expects about a hundred thousand refugees.

The Greek Government has tightened the asylum and residence procedures for forced migrants in the framework of its policies to combat refugee influx.

This was reported by Minister of Migration and Asylum Panagiotis Mitarakis in an interview with the newspaper “Vima”, reports Deutsche Welle.

The period of asylum for forced migrants will be limited to three years. There will be no more unlimited refugee status: if the conditions in the country, where the refugee arrived from, have changed, he will no longer be allowed to stay in Greece.

Mitarakis explains this position by the difficulties in integrating different groups. According to him, Greece has already granted asylum to about 40 thousand people since the beginning of the crisis in 2015. In 2020, Greece expects about one hundred thousand refugees.

36 thousand refugees are now accommodated on five islands in the Aegean Sea in camps for only 6200 people.
