On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov negatively assessed the US foreign policy in Venezuela, criticizing the US “provocations” and attempts by this country to create a situation on the verge of military intervention. It is reported by Reuters.
Lavrov’s condemnation of Washington’s actions against the backdrop of a policy of abstaining from contradictions by the Trump administration, adopted by the Mexican government, was quite sharp.
Many countries, including the United States, recognize the full President of Venezuela, the opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is making efforts to overthrow Maduro. In an attempt to remove Maduro, Washington imposed sanctions.
Lavrov called attempts to get rid of Maduro “useless”, and also said that Washington’s threats against Venezuela are counterproductive. According to the Foreign Minister, the United States is “openly threatening and engaged in provocation”.
“No one can solve the problems of Venezuelans for them, but third parties may well try to prevent them from negotiating. We see such attempts aimed at creating a pretext for military intervention”, – the Russian state news agency TASS quoted Lavrov as saying.
“Russia and Mexico agree that this will be categorically unacceptable”, – Lavrov added.
“The United States believes that everything is allowed, and at the same time, they threaten the interlocutors, including punishment and sanctions. Our and your American colleagues are obsessed with the idea of dictatorship in this region”, – Lavrov said at the press conference in Mexico City, according to a live translation of his comments into Spanish.
