Arab activists in the United States believe Trump’s “deal of the century” violates international law

They believe the American leader wants to “distract public attention” from the Senate’s impeachment proceedings.

The U.S. administration’s plan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, also called the “deal of the century”, violates international law and is a disgrace for the U.S.. This opinion is contained in a joint statement issued on Monday by Arab and Palestinian human rights organizations based in the United States.

“The publication of the so-called deal of the century is yet another shameful act by [US President Donald] Trump’s administration. The “peace agreement” is supposed to bring about an end to the conflict, which is to the mutual benefit of both parties and can only be reached on equal terms. This so-called deal is nothing more than an attempt by President Trump to impose an extremist Israeli agenda on the Palestinians without regard for their [Palestinian] most basic rights and wishes,” the document says. According to the activists, the U.S. government’s policy towards the Palestinians “is not based on any moral or legal principles,” but is “to the detriment of peace, stability and national interests of the United States.

“The so-called Trump deal of the administration is a violation of international law, an attempt to legitimize illegal Israeli settlements in the face of condemnation by the whole world,” said the human rights activists. They believe that the U.S. leader wants to “distract public attention” from the Senate trial under the impeachment procedure.

“There can be no just and lasting peace agreement without ensuring the freedom of the Palestinian people. To this end, we call on Americans to abandon the “farce of the century” of the Trump administration, and we also call for Israel to be held fully responsible”, –  the statement said. Activists suggest that the U.S. provide military assistance to Israel only if it “ends the occupation. In their view, this will lead to “Israelis and Palestinians can live together in peace and security.

Last week, Palestinian authorities said they will reject any steps proposed by the U.S. to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that are contrary to international law. The American leader said on Monday that the White House will make public its settlement plan on Tuesday at noon local time (20:00 Moscow time). Trump also noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the American initiative, while the Palestinian side, according to the head of the Washington administration, will support it in the future. In addition, according to the president, the plan is supported by “many Arab countries”.
