British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opposed a referendum on Scottish independence. He expressed his position in a letter that was sent to the first Minister of Scotland, Nicole Sturgeon, and also posted on Johnson’s Twitter page.
“You and your predecessor made a personal promise that the 2014 referendum would be the only vote for a generation. The people of Scotland convincingly voted to preserve a united United Kingdom, and the governments of Great Britain and Scotland pledged to respect the results of voting”, – the letter said.
In November 2019, Johnson said he would not allow another referendum on Scottish independence to be held, which the region’s leadership insists on.
