Iran rocketed the US military in Iraq early on Wednesday in revenge for the US drone attack on an Iranian commander, whose killing last week raised concerns about a wider Middle East war.
Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles from its territory to at least two Iraqi targets, where the US-led coalition personnel were located at around 1:30 in the morning (Tuesday, 10:30 GMT), the US military said.
Iranian officials said their country did not want war, and its attacks “completed” its response to the assassination on Friday of Kassem Soleimani, a powerful general whose funeral in Iran after several days of mourning was completed almost simultaneously with the launch of Iranian missiles.
The US President Donald Trump said on Twitter that he was assessing the casualties and damage from the strikes and that he would make a statement on Wednesday morning.
“All is well!”, – Trump said, who visited one of the target sites, Ain Assad Air Force Base, on Twitter in December 2018.
One source said the early signs were not victims in the United States. Other US officials declined to comment.
According to a state media statement, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that it fired rockets in revenge for the assassination of Kassem Soleimani last week.
The forces advised the United States to withdraw its troops from the region to prevent new deaths, and warned the US allies, including Israel, that they should not allow attacks from their territories.
Iranian television reported that a senior official in the office of Iran’s supreme leader said the missile attacks were the “weakest” of several retaliation scenarios.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the targets were Al-Assad Air Base and another target in Erbil, Iraq.
