The acting White House chief of staff, Mick Malvaynie, has become a key figure in handing over Trump’s demands to freeze military aid to Ukraine, The New York Times reported. This decision caused serious disagreements among the White House top officials.

“The confrontation between Trump’s senior national security advisors and his decision on Ukraine was more intense than it was said before”, –  the newspaper wrote.

It is reported that Defense Minister Mark Esper and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo at a secret meeting in the Oval Office tried to convince Trump that unfreezing assistance to Ukraine would benefit the United States, but failed.

Leading lawyers from the Budget Office, the White House and the Ministry of Justice developed an argument that had not been made public before – about Trump’s role as Commander-in-Chief, which would allow him to unilaterally decide on the freeze without Congressional approval.

“Trump’s decision led to conflict in the higher echelons and was accompanied by confusion in the White House and the Pentagon”, –  the article says.
