On Thursday, China called on the United States and North Korea to resume dialogue and work to resolve differences as soon as possible due to renewed tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over the latter’s nuclear and missile programs.
Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui and the US Special Envoy for North Korea Stephen Bigong met in the Chinese capital on Thursday and exchanged views on phased denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. He added that both sides agreed to continue communication on this issue.
On Monday, China and Russia presented a joint proposal calling on the US Security Council to lift some sanctions on exports and foreign workers in order to “break the deadlock” in the complicated talks between Pyongyang and Washington.
“This is the best plan in this situation to resolve the impasse in the denuclearization of North Korea and its peace and stability”, – Luo told reporters at a separate briefing earlier on Thursday, adding that a political solution is still possible, despite the recent increase in tension.
“We hope that interested parties will exercise restraint and meet each other halfway, as well as work through dialogue to realize positive interaction and quickly find a meeting place to find a solution”, – Law told the reporters at the briefing.
