Tayyip Erdogan said he intends to discuss the situation in Libya during possible telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and convince him to abandon the support of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
Marshal Haftar – leads the Libyan National Army, and supports the parliament elected by the people of Libya. Haftar and his supporters control the eastern part of the country. In the west, and in the capital, Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, led by Fayez Sarraj, rules with the support of the UN and the European Union. After the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, dual power reigns in this state.
Turkish President Erdogan, using Russia’s interest in the implementation of the Turkish Stream gas project, is clearly trying to achieve a monopoly in the supply of energy resources in this region.
“Perhaps this week we will talk with Putin. It is necessary that a new Syria does not arise. I believe that he will reconsider his attitude to Haftar, because he has no legality. On January 8, Putin will arrive in Istanbul, we will open the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. And the next telephone conversation will concern only Libya and Haftar,” Erdogan said in an interview with TRT.
