The work and launch of the constitutional committee of the SAR should be accompanied by concrete steps to build confidence, said a statement by UN Secretary General Antoni Guterres.
“The launch and work of the Constitutional Committee should be accompanied by concrete actions to build confidence”, – said the UN Secretary General.
According to Guterres, participation in the work of the constitutional committee, accompanied by the cessation of hostilities throughout the country, will provide UN Special Representative for Syria Geir Pedersen with the necessary atmosphere that he needs to effectively fulfill his mandate in order to facilitate a wider political process.
The first official meeting of the committee under the auspices of the UN will be held in Geneva on Wednesday, October 30.
In late September, the UN announced the formation of a constitutional committee of Syria, designed to prepare constitutional reform, conduct elections on its basis and achieve a political settlement of the protracted Syrian conflict.
The Constitutional Committee consists of 150 people – 50 representatives each from the government, the Syrian opposition and civil society. They will by majority vote adopt constitutional drafts that will be prepared by a small composition of 45 people. Small members will be appointed from among the members of the corresponding parts of the large composition, 15 people from each group. A large body can be convened in parallel or periodically as the work of a small body moves forward to discuss and accept proposals.
