Beijing protests the United States over new requirements for Chinese diplomats

Beijing on Thursday expressed a protest to Washington and made a presentation in connection with the new requirements for Chinese diplomats working in the United States, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a briefing.

Since October 16, the US State Department introduced new requirements for diplomats of the Chinese embassy and consulates in the States, according to which they must notify the US Foreign Ministry in advance of their official visits to representatives of authorities, universities and research institutes. It was noted that this action should stimulate the Chinese authorities to provide American diplomats with greater freedom of movement in China.

“The US State Department has put forward additional requirements for Chinese diplomats working in the United States in the performance of their usual duties, China has protested in this regard and has already made a strict representation to the American side”, –  said Geng Shuang.

He stressed that US statements that China restricts the actions of American diplomats working in the PRC have no basis.

“China insists that the United States correct its mistakes, cancel the corresponding decision, provide the necessary conditions and support to Chinese diplomats in their work in the United States, instead of creating obstacles”, –  he said.
