86 % of Latvian students choose Russian as a second foreign language

A heated debate over the fact that a large part of pupils in Latvia choose Russian as a second foreign language flared up on Twitter.

“It was announced at the parents-teachers conference that  students  learn a second language – 12% German, 1% French, 1% other languages and the remaining 86% Russian to addition to English as the first foreign language. Is Latvia an EU country ? Of course, you may learn the Russian language, but you need to know some other EU languages in the EU, ” —  Ieva Kalnina writes.

A hot discussion immediately flared up . Some supported the indignant author, while others stated that there is nothing surprising in the fact that people do not want to forget the Russian language.

However, the problem of teacher shortages remains . 90% of schools cannot simply offer Russian as a second foreign language.
