Peru: Protesters and police clash at general strike against labour reforms in Lima

Clashes broke out between protesters and riot police in Lima on Thursday, during a general strike in rejection of a labour reform proposed by the government of Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra.

Footage from Lima shows the riot police retreating in front of the protesters, who hurl objects at them, such as stones and sticks. The riot police was filmed firing tear gas.

The nationwide general strike was called up by the country’s largest labour unions, such as the General Confederation of Workers in Peru (CGTP) and the United Workers’ Confederation (CUT).

According to reports, the unions say that the proposed law will make it easier for employers to fire workers, it will weaken collective bargaining rights and it will reduce minimum requirements for paid holidays.

Similar protests were also held in other cities across the country, such as Arequipa, Loreto, Huancayo, Ayacucho and Apurimac.
