The CDU celebrated their projected first place finish in the German EU vote, during a election event in Berlin on Sunday evening.
Exit polls had the CDU/CSU at around 28 percent, ahead of the Greens, on around 20 percent, and the SPD – at around 15.5 percent.
Speaking at a press conference, CDU Secretary General Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, said she had hoped for a better overall result, insisting however that the objective to become the strongest EU party in Germany was achieved.
