When The Western Way Does Not Mean Democracy: Moldova Legalized Language Discrimination

A few years ago, the Council for the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination received a complaint regarding the lack of a Russian-language version on the website of the Ministry of Justice of Moldova, which was rightly regarded as a violation of minority rights. However, the Supreme Court of Justice did not agree with this.

After consideration of the complaint by the Council, the Ministry of Justice appealed to the capital’s Appeals Chamber in the hope that the resolution would be revised there, and hopes were justified. “The protection and support of the languages of national minorities should not be to the detriment of the official languages and the need to study them,” said the decision of the Appeals Chamber.

Now, this resolution was also supported by the Supreme Court of Justice, calling for the decision of the Council to be annulled, which tried to protest the decision, but their case was rejected by the Supreme Court of Justice.
