Spain: Thousands demonstrate in Madrid on International Women’s Day

Up to 375,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid on Friday, marking International Women’s Day, according to the local government.

The mobilisation included, for the second consecutive year, a day of female workers strike and a student strike, as well as two-hour work stoppages in workplaces promoted by the main unions.

Protesters say that despite the change in the government over the past year, there have been hardly any real changes in feminist issues such as sexual assault and wage inequality.

“We have to go out and vote, it’s vital. Right now there are some very dangerous streams in Spain, but above all for women. They scare me,” said the 61-year-old Mariana.
