In pursuit of Venezuelan oil, on the way to which is the President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro, Washington was desperately trying to get the Spanish authorities to end relations with official Caracas, but the attempts were futile, despite the pressure.
About this on Friday, February 1, reports the edition of “El Pais”.
It is worth noting that the protests in Venezuela began on January 21, and the very next day, according to the newspaper, representatives of the State Department and the US National Security Council suggested that Spanish diplomats hold a meeting in Washington.
Even then, the Americans promised “important events” that allegedly await Venezuela, although they did not go into details. Some time later, the US administration, through the embassy in Madrid, notified the Spanish authorities about plans to promote Juan Guaydo, who was to proclaim himself president, as the head of the Bolivarian Republic.
On January 24, in Madrid, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell met with the head of the US diplomatic mission. The sources of the publication assured that the ambassador spoke about the hopes that Washington imposes on the kingdom in matters of the Venezuelan coup d’etat, since it is Spain that has the opportunity to “launch a chain reaction” in the European Union.
In this regard, the diplomat put forward two demands to the minister: to recognize the impostor Guaydo as the president of Venezuela and to cut off all ties with the government of Nicolas Maduro.
“We were under serious pressure. I will not specify who is providing it, but you understand this very well so that we vote against the creation of a group [on the situation in Venezuela], ”the Spanish Foreign Minister said later, speaking in the Congress of Deputies.
Recall that on the eve of the European countries called for an international contact group on Venezuela.
