The link between the self-proclaimed President of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, with the customers of the local coup in the face of the Americans was obvious, and, as it became known, without Washington’s blessing, he would not even dare to play for the head of state, writes the American edition of The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources.
Earlier it became known that in early January, Guaido visited the United States for certain purposes. Now, however, it became known that he put forward his claims for the presidency after being given the go-ahead by US Vice President Michael Pence.
“At night, before the oppositionist declared himself acting president, he had a phone call from Vice President Michael Pence,” sources told the outlet. Moreover, the politician promised support if Guaido “intercepts the country’s leadership from Nicolas Maduro, referring to one of the provisions of the constitution.”
At the same time, the newspaper noted that the plan to overthrow the current government of Venezuela was developed for several weeks, and the call from Pence served as a signal for its enforcement.
As soon as Donald Trump took the office, he declared Venezuela one of the priorities for his administration, the article says. It shared a place with Iran and North Korea.
“In late December – early January, they [Washington] began negotiations with the opposition,” a source said. And already on January 2, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave instructions to colleagues from Brazil and Colombia. Now, when the plan is already being implemented, Washington is working with Venezuelan businessmen, trying to win over them.
