UN: Mediterranean Migrants Arrival Double in 2019

4,216 migrants crossed the sea this year to Europe, which is almost twice more than in the same period in 2018, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Friday.

“The UN Migration Agency reports that in the first 16 days of 2019, 4,216 migrants and immigrants arrived by sea. This amount almost doubles the total number (2,365) that arrived during the same period in 2018,” was said in a statement.

While migrants without any documents arriving by sea to Spain, reach almost 80 percent of all Mediterranean arrivals of this type until mid-January, meanwhile their total amount is now almost equal to the number registered in this European country in the first three months of 2018, added the IOM.
