France: Students march through Paris in education reform protest

Hundreds of students marched through Paris on Thursday as protests over French President Emmanuel Macron’s education reforms continue.

Students marched to Republic Square, setting off a small fire that was extinguished by firefighters.

The protest is part of a larger movement of student protests in the city against Macron’s proposed school reforms. The government is seeking to change many aspects of the French education system, but proposals to introduce selective criteria for university admissions have proven to be particularly unwelcome amongst students.

Protests have erupted throughout France in recent weeks, initially at Macron’s plans to raise petrol prices, which have snowballed to encompass a variety of issues such as the wealth gap, living conditions and other planned reforms.
