Thousands of people crossed the Suchiate river between Guatemala and Mexico heading northwards into the Mexican state of Chiapas on Monday, in what is believed to be the second migrant caravan.
Many were seen forming a human chain to reach the riverbank on Mexico’s side of the border, but were met by ranks of Mexican federal police, who blocked them from entering and forced them to wait until an agreement was reached.
“We decided to cross because we are desperate, but we don’t want to stay here as we can’t help our families in Honduras”, said Carlos Enrique Carcamo, a man from Honduras.
After several hours of talks, the migrants were taken to the Immigration Centre and handed a free pass.
“No, we decided to cross because we are desperate, we do not want to be here. Being here we can not help our families in Honduras, because we come with hope.”
“Two lives saved and I don’t regret it, I lost all my money, I lost everything I was wearing, my shoes, I saved two lives and I don’t regret it, I would have been deported.”
