Newly released photos raise questions about French military role in Syria’s Deir Ezzor

A French army vehicle was visible in photos of the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor released by the US on Wednesday, raising questions about the nature of French involvement in the region. FRANCE 24’s Wassim Nasr discusses the implications.
The US Army released two pictures on Wednesday of US troops in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor, where US-backed fighters are battling jihadists to recapture the last Islamic State group stronghold. In the photo’s background a French army vehicle is clearly visible, indicating that French troops may also be taking part in the battle there – something the French government has never acknowledged.

The pictures were quickly pulled from the internet, but not before they raised new questions about the French military’s role in the region.
