The Catalan National Day ‘La Diada’ saw close to a million pro-independence protesters flooding the streets of Barcelona on Tuesday.
In the rally organised by the National Catalan Assembly, protesters demanded the release of jailed Catalan politicians, while in the organised by the far-right Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), the right to vote for Catalan’s independence by its citizens was highlighted.
Unlike most independence days, Catalan National Day ‘La Diada’ celebrated on September 11, commemorates the fall of Barcelona to the troops of King Philip V of Spain after a 14-month siege in 1714.
