Trump thanks Kim Jong-un for delivering soldiers’ remains

US President Donald Trump thanked the top North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, for the delivery today of the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War (1950-1953).
The White House reported that a US Air Force C-17 aircraft left with the remains from the coastal city of Wonsan, in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), to the base of Osan in South Korea, as a step prior to formal repatriation on August 1.

In his account at the social network Twitter, Trump wrote near midnight that the remains of the US military were leaving North Korea to go soon to the United States.

‘After so many years, this will be a great moment for many families, thanks to Kim Jong-un,’ the US Republican President added in his tweet.

On June 12 Trump had a historic meeting in Singapore with the DPRK leader.

In the communiqué released last night, the White House stated that at that meeting the interlocutors took a bold first step to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, transformation on bilateral relations and establish a lasting peace.

‘Today, President Kim is fulfilling part of the commitment he made with Trump to return our members of the US service. We are encouraged by North Korea’s actions and the momentum for positive change,’ the statement added.

After the news spread about the departure of the DPRK military plane, South Korea confirmed that the aircraft with the remains of 55 US soldiers fallen in the armed conflagration arrived at the Osan Air Base.

After World War II, the conflict between the two Koreas broke out in 1950, where multinational troops participated (in practice a majority of the North American army commanded by General Douglas MacArthur).

The war ended in 1953 with the signing of an armistice in Panmunjom, a border village that has become a meeting point for peace on the Korean peninsula.

It is estimated that more than 35,000 US soldiers died in that war, of which 7,700 were not found, including 5,300 that are believed to have died in the area corresponding to the DPRK.
