Pro-EU campaigners have claimed the momentum in Suffolk is shifting towards support for a second Brexit vote, after more than 100 people took part in a ‘Brexitometer’ survey in Halesworth.
Supporters of the Suffolk EU Alliance held an event in Halesworth Thoroughfare to call for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal, where they invited locals of all political persuasions to share their views on the current situation.
Organiser of the event, Suffolk EU Alliance committee member Philip Gough said: “It’s now clearer than ever that Brexit will be damaging for Suffolk and the country. That’s why this weekend we campaigned in Halesworth to listen to the concerns of people and to make clear the only way out of this mess is to return power and responsibility to us – the people – through a People’s Vote.
“Our first use of the ‘Brexitometer’ was a huge success: it gives a striking visual image of how sentiment towards Brexit is running. Over 100 people engaged with this. It’s clear the momentum is shifting in Suffolk for a People’s Vote on Brexit.
“We will be sending a copy of the Brexitometer to Halesworth’s MP Thérèse Coffey. We hope she will take note.”
People were also invited to sign a petition for a People’s Vote, which gained 90 signatures.
Responding to the petition, Dr Coffey said she received correspondence from constituents on both sides of the Brexit divide, with the majority more concerned with speeding up the leaving process.
“There is more of an impatience of why we haven’t left already,” she said. “People accept the decision that was made.”
