Did Washington just buy Armenia? $100mln to goverment laundered through US NGO sparks concern

100 million dollars – is how much United States is ready to gift the new government of Armenia with the mediation of the American state corporation Millennium Challenge.

With the revolutionary Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in power in Armenia, the republic increasingly demonstrates its commitment to the West. The USA, in turn, acting by already well-developed methods, “puts Yerevan on a hook”. So, a tranche of $ 100 million from the Millennium Challenge Corporation will be a “bait” for Armenia, US Congressman Jackie Kanchelian-Spir told on the Voice of America radio.

“I’m cautiously optimistic. Well, if the “Millennium Challenges” program is approved by Armenia, more than $ 100 million of aid can be allocated, “she said.

According to Kanchelian-Spir, she intends to visit Yerevan together with another group of congressmen in the near future to introduce the latter to Armenia and personally to the country’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan: “This will be a very important visit. I want to support the citizens of Armenia, the new Government and the new head of the Government of the Republic. “

In this regard, the head of US diplomacy in Yerevan, Richard Mills, spoke about what conditions of Armenia will be put forward by the American corporation. For example, he stressed that the republic should work on vectors of political freedoms and freedom of the press, as well as fight against corruption. All this is necessary to “meet the criteria and standards of the Millennium Challenge Corporation”.

“Working with the new government, we will encourage changes that will help Armenia meet the criteria, so that next year, when the Millennium Challenge Corporation will make decisions, Armenia could be among those who are approved,” said the US ambassador, confident in that citizens of the republic want these reforms, since, in his opinion, this is good for Armenia.

As previously reported, the representative of the staff of NATO Secretary General James Appathurai said that the alliance needs to deepen relations with Armenia , especially in carrying out reforms.
