“EU wont help Syria until political process with Assad begins” says EU Representative Mogherini

The EU and UN have called for swift political talks to try and end Syria’s war as they host an international donor conference in Brussels. They also warned that the latest territorial gains by Damascus and its allies had not brought peace any closer.

“We still believe that it is vital that the cessation of hostilities, in particular for the humanitarian access is guaranteed,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said.  “The EU is not, has never been a military player, we are a humanitarian and political player,” the official added.

The conference in Brussels is seeking billions of euros in aid for Syria. The EU has already provided over €11 billion in aid to the population of Syria, as well as refugees. Germany will provide €1 billion in humanitarian assistance for Syria, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
