The pro-Catalan independence Universitats per la Republica (Universities for the Republic) have called for a student strike on October 26, during a press statement in Barcelona, in response to Madrid’s decision to move ahead with the enacting of Article 155, Monday.
Spokesperson Jordi Vives said: [We demand] that the Spanish government ends the state of exceptionality that was declared on Catalonia and end the vulnerability of fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and opinion, frees Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart and absolve all people arrested over the organisation of the October 1 referendum, to stop the application of article 155 and respect Catalan institutions and their legitimate decisions.”
On Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the enactment of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which allows for the imposition of direct rule by Madrid over Catalonia.
