Iran ready to play more serious role in Afghanistan’s development

Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli renewed Iran’s support for the development of the neighboring Afghanistan.

“Iran has always tried to help solve Afghanistan’s problems in a bid to play a more serious role in the reconstruction of that country,” Rahmani Fazli said in a ceremony marking Afghanistan’s National Day.

The Iranian interior minister reiterated that the Iranian government and nation have always supported their Afghan counterparts, and said, “Despite the sanctions imposed against Iran over last decade, Iran has allocated $500 million for Afghanistan’s reconstruction, and is ready to play a more serious role in this process in the future in line with the international community and the regional countries.

In relevant remarks in early June, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour and Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a meeting in Kabul underlined the need for broadening of bilateral relations.

During the meeting in Afghanistan’s capital, Rahimpour and President Ghani explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating mutual cooperation.

During the meeting, the Afghan president said Afghanistan has had good progress in water management and has presented some plans to be implemented to pave the way for water management in the near future.

President Ghani also said that Iran can be connected to China through railroads of Afghanistan and Tajikistan to give a momentum to the economy of the region.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of Kabul Process for Peace and Security Cooperation, in which representatives of 25 countries, the UN, the EU and NATO take part to reach a consensus on combating terrorism and establishing peace in Afghanistan.
