Finland: ‘Good will win in the end’ – Turku’s residents respond to knife attack


Locals paid their respects to victims of a knife attack in Turku, on Saturday, two people were killed and a further eight injured in the southern Finnish city on Friday.

A witness of the attack relayed her initial response: “When I noticed the other victims I just had one thought: how and where can I escape to. Naturally this was before they captured him.” A local resident asserted that Finland was still a safe place. “It’s just a single event. There’s no need to give any space to fear, and the good will win in the end.”

On Friday a lone assailant attacked pedestrians with a knife in the southwestern Finnish city’s Puutori market square. The 18-year-old attacker was subsequently shot in the leg and later taken into custody. Police are treating the event as a terrorist attack.
