Iran to Take Countermeasures in Response to New US Sanctions Against Tehran

Iran will respond to new sanctions imposed by the US.

Iran will adopt retaliatory measures in response to the United States’ decision to introduce new sanctions against Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday.

“Iranian parliament would, in the first step, adopt its own measures in response to the US sanctions. And we will take any other step that we deem necessary in line with the interests of our country, and we would continue our path without paying attention to their [US] sanctions and policies,” Rouhani said during a cabinet meeting, as quoted by the Fars news agency.

The Iranian leader added that the Iranian people were used to “US hostilities.”

“Over the past 40 years, the Iranians have been subject to sanctions, pressure, false accusations by American politicians and propaganda apparatus,” Rouhani said.

On Tuesday, the US House approved by a 419-3 vote a new version of a bill that would impose sweeping sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea. The law imposes punitive measures against Tehran over the country’s ballistic weapons program and human rights abuses, among other issues.

The bill is yet to be approved by the US Senate.
